Block trades explained
Block trades explainedBlock trades explainedHowever, when a large institutional investor seeks to buy or sell a large chunk of stock, or a block of stock, the sheer size of the order involves additional facilitation. A buy order for 200,000 shares of IBM stock, for instance, would not easily be accomplished without a block trader. At any given moment, only so much stock is available for sale, and to buy a large quantity would drive the price up in the market (to entice more sellers into the market to sell). For a NYSE stock, the process of block trading is similar to that of any small buy or sell order. The difference is that a small trade arrives electronically to the specialist on the floor of the exchange, while a block trade runs through a floor broker, who then hand-delivers the order to the specialist. The style of a block trade also differs, depending on the clients wishes. Some block trades are done at the market and some block trades involve working the order. At the market. S ay Fidelity wishes to buy 200,000 shares of IBM, and they first contact the block trader at an investment bank. If Fidelity believed that IBM stock was moving up, they would indicate that the purchase of the shares should occur at the market. In this case, the trader would call the floor broker (in reality, he contacts the floor brokers clerk), to tell him or her to buy the next available 200,000 shares of IBM. The clerk delivers the ticket to the floor broker, who then takes it to the specialist dealing in IBM stock. Again, the specialist acts as an auctioneer, matching sellers to the IBM buyer. Once the floor broker accumulates the entire amount of stock, likely from many sellers, his or her clerk is sent back to the phones to call back the trader. The final trading price is a weighted average of all of the purchase prices from the individual sellers.Working the order. Alternately, if Fidelity believes that IBM was going to bounce around in price, they might ask the trader to work the order in order to hopefully get a better price than what is currently in the market. The trader then would call the floor broker and indicate that he or she should work at finding as low a price as possible. In this case, the floor broker might linger at the IBM trading post, watching for sell orders to come in, hoping to accumulate the shares at as low a price as possible.

How to Calculate Your Take-Home Pay
How to Calculate Your Take-Home PayHow to Calculate Your Take-Home PayWho is FICA and why am I paying him so much? is a question many of us have asked while examining a pay stub. FICA is an acronym that stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act, the law that created Social Security. Your share of FICA includes employee contributions for Social Security and Medicare. Employers also pay a share of the FICA tax for each employee. FICA is just one of many potential paycheck reducers that represent the difference between your salary, or gross pay, and the actual amount you take home, your net pay. Calculating Your Take-Home Pay If you want to know what your paycheck will look like before you take a job, there is a way to figure out exactly how much youll have left over after FICA, federal taxes, state taxes, and any other applicable deductions are removed. There are a few things you should have on hand to calculate your take-home pay The amount of your gross pay. If you earn a fi xed salary, this is easy to figure out. Just divide the annual amount by the number of periods each year. If you are paid hourly, multiply that rate by 40 hours to determine your weekly pay.Your number of personal exemptions. When you start a new job, you fill out a W-4 form to tell your employer how much to withhold from your check. The number may be zero or one if you are single, or greater if you have dependents.Your tax filing status. There are standard federal and state tax deductions that vary depending on whether you are single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household, or a surviving spouse. Other payroll deductions. This category could include contributions to a 401(k) retirement plan, health insurance, life insurance, or a flexible spending account for medical expenses. It also may include union dues or any other garnishments that are taken from your wages. It helps to categorize unterstellung according to pre-tax and after-tax contributions, to deduct them from either your gross salary or after-tax calculation. Calculating Taxable Income First, calculate your FICA taxes for the year, otherwise known as your contribution to Social Security and Medicare. Everyone pays a flat, 7.65 percent rate on the first $128,400 (as of 2018) of earned income. You can reduce the amount of your annual gross pay by this percentage before making other calculations. Next, adjust your annual gross income by subtracting personal exemptions and standard deductions that the IRS gives you before it calculates your income tax. The personal exemption rate changes each year, so be sure to find current exemption rates when making your calculation. For every exemption claimed on your W-4 form, you will subtract the current rate from your gross income. Your standard deduction is subtracted next. Standard deductions also change from year to year and are based on your filing status. You can find current standard deduction rates on the IRS website. Onc e youve subtracted personal exemptions and a standard deduction, the resulting number should be very close to your taxable income. This is the total that will be used to determine your federal and state tax brackets. Calculating Income Taxes There are several taxes that may be applied to your gross pay, including federal, state, and even local income taxes. The amount of federal tax you pay will depend on your filing status and bracket, which you can find in the Federal Tax Bracket tables updated annually by the Tax Foundation. If you live in a state with a personal income tax, you will need to find your state tax bracket to determine how much will be deducted from your take-home pay. Each state has its own set of brackets which should be available on the state government website where you live. The Tax Foundation also lists recent state individual income tax rates and brackets on its website. It also includes information on local taxes, where they apply. New York City, for exam ple, has its own tax on income. Add together your federal, state, and other income taxes, and this is the amount that will be deducted from your paychecks over the course of the year. Other After-Tax Payroll Deductions Remember also to subtract any other relevant deductions. Depending on whether they are pre-tax or after-tax deductions, you can deduct them from your salary before or after calculating income tax due. For example, if you contribute 6 percent of pretax salary to a 401(k) retirement plan, take that amount from your gross salary before calculating your taxes. Health insurance premiums paid by you are also typically taken from gross pay before taxes are taken out. For union dues and other garnishments, you can verify whether they are taken out before or after tax, or use estimates for those figures. Final Calculations To determine the total amount of money deducted from your paychecks, add up the amounts youve calculated for FICA taxes, income taxes, and other ded uctions, then subtract that total amount from your annual gross pay. Whats left is your net pay. Divide both your total deductions and your net pay by the number of pay periods for the year to determine how much those amounts will be per paycheck. Free Online Paycheck Calculators Online resources can help you simplify the process. Once you have a sense of who exactly gets a piece of your paycheck and how much, you can easily determine your take-home pay using an online paycheck calculator.

Everyone Counts in Job Search Mode
Everyone Counts in Job Search ModeEveryone Counts in Job Search ModeEveryone Counts in Job Search ModeAt a recent picnic, my wife and I struck up a conversation with a young man who welches walking around with his Nikon camera, taking pictures of everyone.Since one of my hobbies is photography and my favorite camera is a Nikon, instantaneously he welches my new best friend. In having our conversation, I found out that he welches a recent college graduate with a degree in construction management. He graduated with honors. However, he had not been successful in getting a job since graduating.Since I have a daughter that graduated that same year and is gainfully employed within zu sich major, I wanted to talk to him in more depth. Is your message coherent? So after the initial conversation, I asked a few simple questions what are you looking for?Tell me about you. That is where it derailed. His response was all over the map. While he was looking for an entry-level position, his passion was photography. Then it was back to his major and as they say on and on.This went on a while as I listened geschiebemergel he stopped talking. When he did, I said we have to talk. I told him my background and then proceeded to tell him the importance of having a pitch and to stay on point. Not only that, I had contacts within the construction industry that I could connect him to. But first he needed to work on HIS presentationNever discount anyoneThis reminded me of a story that a career consultant friend of mine told me. There was a senior-level executive in New York who was laid off during the latest recession. After a while of trying to find another job, she decided to go back home to the Midwest to take a break. One day she decides to spend the morning with her grandmother. As the both of them were having coffee, her grandmother asked her about her job search and what she was looking to do. Since this question came from her grandmother, she kind of sidestepped it. She figured her gr andmother would not be of any help. When her grandmother persisted, she finally told her that there was this particular company that she really wanted to work for but was not having any luck in connecting with anyone there. She noticed her grandmother staring away as if trying to remember something. Just then, she excused herself from the room and came back with her phone book.As she looked through her phone book, her granddaughter looked on puzzled. Finally, she asked her what she was looking for. She told her that her bridge partners granddaughter works for that company and is one of their senior executives. After a phone call, she came back and gave her granddaughter a phone number and told her to call the young lady. Within a few weeks, she had an interview, and within a month, she was employed with her dream company.Everyone counts in job search modeThe moral of the story is that while in job search mode, everyone you come in contact with has the potential to land you that job. You must perfect your pitch. This is your advertisement and you must make it work.It is called the 2-minute pitch, but it does not have to be two minutes. My suggestion to my friend is this. Spend some time in front of the mirror perfecting your pitch as to who you are, what you are looking for, and why a company should hire you. If it is two minutes fine, if not, and you still get your point across, even better.Use every opportunity whether at a cookout, on your commute, or basically anywhere you engage in conversation to get in your pitch. Use every opportunity to describe the package that you bring to the table. It is critical to your career search and will increase your visibility and influence. So, next time you are at an event, everyone that is there could be the one that enables you to make the connection. Dont discount anyone.About the AuthorTodays post is written by Ron Thomas (pictured), a human resources professional with more than 15 years of experience, including roles wi th Martha Stewart Living and IBM. HR Strategies to Break Down a Siloed Mentality at Work
HR Strategies to Break Down a Siloed Mentality at WorkHR Strategies to Break Down a Siloed Mentality at WorkIf youve ever visited a farm, youve seen large grain silos. They are generally tall, and silver and they stand separate from each other. What you put in one silo doesnt affect the others. Unfortunately, you can experience the same mentality at work when people are working in silos. What Does Working in Silos Mean for Your Workplace? When your department does X, and the neighboring department does Y, and you dont understand each others processes, you work in a silo. Furthermore, when you are working in a silo environment, you tend to think that your operations are critical, and the other departments are bedrngnis. Worse, when your department actively works to achieve X and the neighboring department actively works to stop X, youre not only siloed, youre antagonistic. This happens more often than you might think. For example, the Human Resources department wants to increase t raining and development budgets to help reduce turnover, while the finance department keeps slashing departmental budgets. HR cant understand why finance is so tight-fisted, and finance cant understand why HR keeps presenting employee training and development proposals that call for increases in the budget. You can see how difficult it is to get work done in these situations, but businesses often end up siloed. Part of this is tradition, and part of the problem comes from managers who like accomplishing their tasks and dont want to integrate with the rest of the company. How HR Can Help People Who Are Working In Silos The HR department should be the expert in people, just like finance should be the experts in money. So, HR is well positioned to help with the breakdown of these silos. Speak the saatkorn Language to Avoid Siloed Communication This point is not about everyone speaking English or Spanish it is about the language of each department. Often, silos happen because, while employees say words, the other group doesnt understand what the employees of the other department mean with the words they use. This isnt unusual if youre an HR manager in a research laboratory, do you understand scientific jargon? Probably not. Moreover, if youre a scientist, do you know all of the acronyms that HR throws at you? Stay cognizant of the fact that HR talk is not universally understood. When you speak with other departments or coach departments in how to better communicate with each other, note that the departments may not communicate successfully because of the differences in language. If you look at the above example of a conflict between HRs desire to expand training and finances need to cut the budget, you can see that a bit of translation solves the problem. What language does finance speak? Numbers. HR generally focuses on words and soft skills. So, if you come into finance and say, We will increase employee engagement and retain our best employees if we increas e our training and development opportunities, the head of finance hears, Blah, blah, blah, thats expensive. Instead say, Every year we spend $250,000 on recruiting and training new hires. If we spend $50,000 on this new training program, we can expect to lower turnover by 10 percent. We expect to break even in two years, and save money every year after that. Thats a proposition that finance can understand far better than the words, employee engagement. End the pferderennbahn Wars Between Siloed Departments Brent Gleeson identified Turf Wars as one of the causes of siloed departments. For your department to win another department must lose. Therefore, it is to your advantage to keep information secret. HR can help address compensation plans, including bonus plans, that can remove these turfs. If winning requires help from other groups, people will speak to each other. Additionally, cross training and internal transfers can cut down on the dig in your heels mentality. If an employee m oves from operations to finance or HR, he or she brings with them a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed in the other department. This deep understanding can help all of the new departments employees see how working together is good for the business, and how overall business success is good for the individual departments. Working in Silos Starts With the Expectations of Senior Employees If the CEO enjoys watching her senior team battle with each other, you can almost guarantee she will have siloed departments. Instead, the CEO needs to work to bring her team together and reward her department heads for collaboration and teamwork. Isnt Technology Part of the dicke bretter bohren mssen When People Work in Silos? You might think that enabling people to work from home and communicate mainly through instant messages would build a fractured team. Its possible, but fractured groups and silos existed long before email and instant messaging existed. Technology is neutral its ho w you use it that matters. HR can encourage the use of technology to bring people together. For instance, its now easy to share reports among different departments. Its also easy to talk to your coworker who is at another site or works from home. You can get instant responses and input. Make sure your employees arent using technology as an excuse for their bad behavior. Just like grain silos, there are gaps between departmental silos, and you lose a lot of information in these gaps. Work together with your HR team to ensure that the departments communicate with each other. Strive to create a workplace in which better understanding the goals, needs, and interconnectivity of your groups or departments brings a more cohesive team and better delivery results. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer and former menschlich resources professional with over 10 years of experience.

How To Handle An Unhappy Employee - Spark Hire
How To Handle An Unhappy Employee - Spark HireImagine this scenario as a supervisor or HR professional an employee comes into your office and asks to speak with you privately. When they close the door and sit down, they divulge to you that they are very unhappy with their job at present, for any number of reasons. How, as their supervisor, superior, or member of HR support, should you field their questions, concerns, and even anger, in order to help them out? These situations can be complicated and difficult to understand, but as their superior, you should first seek to understand the entire situation, and then act. What are the underlying reasons for this employees unhappiness? Are they upset with their compensation? Do they believe their workload is unfair? Do they find it difficult to collaborate with their coworkers? Perhaps their unhappiness is stemming from something in their personal life, an unsupportive spouse or bills that are not being covered. As a supervisor facing this s ituation, be cognizant of which issues might require the presence of a human resources professional. When you have assessed the situation for the true cause, ask what the employee has already actively done in order to make their situation better. If they are struggling with a particular employee, have they approached this employee about their behavior and explained how it negatively affects them? If they feel stuck in their current position, have they looked at other openings within the company or actively pursued development opportunities that might align them with promotions? If they havent taken action on their own at this point, a gentle reminder to do so may be in order.Iftheyvealready exhausted other options, what can you offer them to help revamp their motivation and productivity? Depending on their specific needs, here are some ideas for offering them helpNew projects and tasks Perhaps its time for a shift within your team. When employees do the same tasks every day, they can become complacent about their levels of accuracy and efficiency and quite simply, they can become bored. You can most likely boost accuracy and productivity by shifting some tasks around within your team, putting new eyes and a new perspective on each task.Continuing education Can the company afford to send a few employees to a seminar or class about productivity or to learn a new computer program or other skill? If so, perhaps send your disgruntled employee and ask them to share about their experience when they return. Hopefully the time outside the office will be refreshing and the class or seminar will encourage them that they can excel in their job.Mentoring and professional development If the employee is genuinely concerned with moving upward and feeling like they have little way of doing that, offer them a few avenues. Maybe suggest having a mentoring relationship with someone in a position they admire. Or, offer other professional development opportunities such as seminars o r allow the employee to sit in on a meeting that may give them a higher level understanding of the company. Most likely, a discouraged or unhappy employee simply needs a new task, new perspective, or new goal in order to motivate them in their job. There are numerous ways this can be accomplished as a supervisor or HR professional, beginning with understanding the employees unhappiness for exactly what it is.Have you ever experienced a scenario like the one first described? Back on the Job Restore Your Battered Finances
Back on the Job Restore Your Battered FinancesBack on the Job? Restore Your Battered FinancesBack on the Job Restore Your Battered FinancesTodays guest post is written by Victoria, who offers insight and understanding from an experienced perspective on Ratelines.com. Since 2007, she has been producing online content for her clients and online audience, specializing in financial advice and ways to calculate interest rates.Poor economic conditions, including unemployment rates near 10%, have forced many people who wouldnt normally do so to liquidate their savings and rely on credit cards to pay their bills. As the economy improves, and mora people go back to work, rebuilding financial strength should be a top priority. If youre among those whove experienced a financial battering, and you recently started a new job, here are three steps you can take to rebuild your finances after your new income reaches a steady flow1.Refinance your mortgage.Mortgage rates are still low, but will likely increase over the next couple years. If youre getting back to work, you now have a reliable income stream and can take advantage of the low mortgage rates to reduce your monthly payment, possibly by hundreds of dollars.2.Rebuild your savings.Another important step is to rebuild an emergency fund that can pay several months worth of bills. Aim to add to that fund until it contains about nine months of living expenses. To rebuild your fund quickly, establish a detailed budget and do everything you can to stick to it. Cut back on unnecessary costs such as trips to Starbucks, eating out, movie rentals, even magazine subscriptions and things you dont use. It may be difficult at first, but if you stick to your budget for a solid year, youll look back and feel not only wealthier but also empowered because you will have tamed your spending. You may even reward yourself with a weekend trip to the beach.3.Pay down your debt.Next, target your credit card balances. Having a large amount of outs tanding credit card debt can be financially devastating due to the fact that interest rates often exceed 20%. If this means cutting costs elsewhere for a little while, it will be worth it in the end. After you set up your emergency fund, pay down your outstanding credit card debt as quickly as possible to free up more income that you can either save or spend. While youre at it, shop around for cards with the lowest interest rates to cut your monthly interest expense. One last tip to re-building your savings Dont get discouraged about your current situation. Take control. Once you stop spending on things you dont need, youll start to see not only an increase in your savings account, but also an increase of confidence, which can be more valuable than what you have in the bank.
4 Things You Need to Go from Marketing Director to Marketing Executive
4 Things You Need to Go from Marketing Director to Marketing Executive4 Things You Need to Go from Marketing Director to Marketing ExecutiveIf youre a Director of Marketing (or in a similar mid-level absatzwirtschaft role) the chances are that youre looking for a way to take the next step in your career and move up to a marketing leadership positionsuch as Vice President of Marketing or Chief Marketing Officer. While hard work and experience will go a long way toward helping you advance in your career, and are necessary ingredients, youll likely have to build upon your current skill set and expand your professional network before youll be considered a marketing executive position.I recently spoke with two of my venture capitalist connections that are well-versed in building marketing teams, and are often asked to help hire the right marketing executive to lead their portfolio companies. Id like to highlight four key traits that any marketing executive needs. While this isnt an exhaust ive list of what you need, these are amongst the most important attributes.1. Hone Your Quantitative SkillsToday, every marketing executive needs to be comfortable dealing with marketing metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs). In a conversation with Greg Goldfarb, Managing Director at Summit Partners, Goldfarb told me that he always scans a resume to look at the ratio of numbers to text to get an anfangsbuchstabe sense of how comfortable a candidate is reporting on marketing metrics. A few metrics he looks for are things like the campaign conversion rates, conversion to lead rate, growth in number of marketing qualified leads, etc. Since, as Amanda Augustine pointed out in her recent post, the average recruiter only spends six seconds reviewing your resume, its important to convey this right up front.Phil Dur, Managing Director at Investor Growth Capital says he wants to see executive-level marketing candidates be able to say, I grew marketing-qualified leads from 2,000 per y ear to 7,000 per year and reduced the cost per lead from $60 to $35. So in order to be considered for the position, you need to be in tune with these KPIs and have the acumen to report them in a meaningful way.2. Expand Industry ConnectionsOf course, another critical attribute of a quality marketing executive is that theyre well-connected in their industry. This goes beyond simply being well-connected with individuals in your industry. To be truly valuable as a marketing executive, you need analyst and press connections as well. This means that while youre still at the Director of Marketing level you should be actively seeking to make connections with industry influencers and analyst firms. In my industry, enterprise software, this would mean developing relationships with analysts at firms like Gartner and Forrester and tech publications such as TechCrunch. Look at your industry and decide which are the most important analyst and press publications to seek out. As youre expanding you r network, however, its important to be intentional about who youre connecting with. You should act in your self-interest when networking and ask yourself how building a relationship with that person will further your marketing career. If you cant quickly come up with an answer to that, they might not be the best connection.3. Learn verwesen Marketing TechnologiesIn addition to expanding your network, its important to grow your familiarity with the technologies that run modern marketing campaigns and departments. At the director level, youre likely well-acquainted with customer relationship management (CRM) software and some marketing analytics programs such as Google Analytics, Google AdWords as well as email marketing programs. At the executive level, its important to understand these technologies and then some. At the moment, one particularly important technology to familiarize yourself with is marketing automation. Why? As Phil Dur says, experience with marketing automation syste ms signals that a marketer is used to tying marketing investment to a discrete return, which is important for any marketing executive. If youre not familiar with marketing automation, a great place to take courses and become certified in the needed skills is the Marketing Automation Institutewhich holds marketing events and offers tutorials.4. Obtain C-Suite ReferenceTo round out your skills and expanded network, its important to have C-level approval of your work. Computer Simulation Optimizes Additive Manufacturing
Computer Simulation Optimizes Additive Manufacturing Computer Simulation Optimizes Additive Manufacturing Computer Simulation Optimizes Additive Manufacturing Additive manufacturing (AM) using polymers began in the late 1980s with the introduction of stereolithography, a process that solidifies thin layers of ultraviolet (UV) light-sensitive liquid polymer using a laser. Additive manufacturing has now advanced to the point that it can form solid objects from metal powders. In the early 1990s DTM developed an AM process for the indirect manufacture of metal parts for the tooling market that used the selective laser sintering (SLS) of polymer-coated metal powders, resulting in porous parts that required post-process treatment. Similar AM-metal processes are direct metal laser sintering(DMLS) and electron beam melting. Additive manufacturing using metals is still considered a relatively new technology, and continues to be refined. Eventually AM will allow manufacturers to make complex components, using a wide range of metal powders (including powders with nanograins), that are not possible to make with traditional casting and machining methods. This will reduce costs and improve time to market because fewer secondary steps will be required, which are time-consuming. However, one of the biggest concerns about AM metal parts is the inconsistency of the composition and performance that often results. For example, metal powders that are nominally identical in terms of chemical analysis and grain size can result in parts with differing properties using seeming similar additive manufacturing processes. This may necessitate secondary finishing steps; inconsistent composition and structure can also impact quality, safety, and performance of the final product. Prof. Richard Sisson leads a research team that is developing computational tools for 3D printing metals. Image: WPI To optimize the AM process using metal, Richard Sisson, professor of mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA., has received a $2.66-million U.S. Army grant over two years for research entitled Thermo-Mechanical Processing of Materials by Design. Along with fellow mechanical engineering professors Danielle Cote and Jianyu Liang, Sisson hopes to lower the cost of manufacturing by using innovative computational modeling to improve direct-metal AM processes. Applications for this modeling include various additive manufacturing techniques, including wire arc additive manufacturing and cold spray processing. Through-Process Computational Modeling Sisson, Cote, and Liang plan to develop computational through-process models that can be used to predict the materials composition and mechanical properties of finished additively-consolidated materials. Other computational models will be developed that make it possible to reduce and replace rare and costly elements in materials, such as rare earth elements, that are vital to the U.S. military efforts, without sacrificing necessary performance. Using computer software to develop alloy chemistries and heat-treating processes greatly reduces reliance upon expensive and time-consuming experiments. Computational modeling can significantly reduce the amount of time, money, and resources spent on developing a process or material because it accurately simulates that process or material performance, without actually having to do it. The reduction in trial and error in materials and process design reduces the amount of time it takes for new materials and processes to come to not only our military, but consumers as well, says Sisson. Engineers will be interested in the simulation methodology and the data needed to develop the properties and performance predictions. For example, many additive manufacturing processes utilize metal powder as a feedstock material. Our work demonstrates the importance of understanding the properties of the powder, and the resulting impact these properties have on the additively manufactured material, says Sisson. The significance of powder modeling and characterization is frequently underestimated, but often the properties of these powders have a direct correlation with the consolidated material. Ultimately, for AM parts, Sissons goal is to develop processes that deliver the specified properties required for the AM-fabricated part, without the post processing that is currently needed. The through-process modeling uniquely enables us to correlate the powder specifications and key processing parameters with the properties of the manufactured parts, speeding up the advancement to achieve this goal, Sisson adds. Future Possibilities Sisson successfully used the through-process modeling to optimize the cold-spray process. A through-process model will also be effective approach for AM processes, which follows the properties of the as-received powders through pre-treatments, additive manufacturing, and post-processing treatments. Computational models are used to simulate the microstructure and properties at each stage in the through-process model, explains Sisson. Based on the prediction of the model, we have been able to develop powder alloys that result in parts with improved strength and desired ductility. Additive manufacturing will continue to have a disruptive impact on the fabrication of parts and products, across a wide range of sectors. New developments in process modeling will allow the design of alloys and processes that provide enhanced properties and performance via the simulation with minimal experimental verification, Sisson concludes. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Based on the prediction of the model, we have been able to develop powder alloys that result in parts with improved strength and desired ductility. Things to do in your 20s so you dont live in regret in your 40s
Things to do in your 20s so you don't live in regret in your 40s Things to do in your 20s so you don't live in regret in your 40s They say youth is wasted on the young. It doesnât have to be. If you take a look at Quora and Reddit, hundreds of people older and wiser than you have shared their best tips for living life to the fullest before you hit middle age. All you have to do is heed their advice. We checked out some of those Quora and Reddit threads and highlighted some of our favorite insights about maximizing your youth. Read on to see what life changes you can make, starting today.âLearn to accept and love yourself first.âSo says Quora user Ruchi Rashinkar. In other words, show some self-compassion. Scientists say it can make you more successful because youâre learning from your missteps, instead of just berating yourself for them. One self-compassion exercise involves treating yourself as you would treat a friend or a colleague who has failed. You might say to yourself: âThis is really hard right now,â or, âIâm sorry you are struggling.ââLearn to say no with confidence.âThatâs anoth er tip from Rashinkar.Itâs best to learn this skill now, while itâs still relatively early in your career. That way, you can prioritize the people and experiences that are truly meaningful to you.If youâre looking for tips on turning down an invitation - without seeming antisocial - etiquette and civility expert Rosalinda Oropeza Randall recommends keeping it simple: âIt sounds great, but I think Iâll pass this time.âYou can even push back on your boss when they give you an assignment you feel like you canât take on. For example, if youâre already overloaded with other projects, national workplace expert Lynn Taylor suggests responding:âI would be happy to do that project, but what that could mean is that [whatever other project youâre working on] will have to be put off until tomorrow, because I was actually going to spend the next three hours finishing that proposal. Would you like me to put that off?ââTake risks.âQuora user Pranav Park writes:âThis i s possibly the best time to take multiple leap of faiths and learn your lessons the hard way. If you succeed, you succeed. If you fail, you have a great story to tell in your 40s. At this age, you will have all the energy, courage and spirit required to rise back. Moreover, you will not be afraid to fail which apparently sets apart successful people from the others.âSimilarly, Redditor Bhruic says:âDonât talk yourself out of doing things you want to do. Donât let fear win. If you want to vacation in Europe, do it. If you want to talk to that hot girl/guy at the bar, do it. If you want to start your own business, do it (and do the research first). Getting to your 30s and having a string of regrets is going to haunt you.âPark is right about successful people not being afraid to fail some, and therefore being more willing to take risks. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, for example, is notorious for this quality. Bezos has said: âGiven a ten percent chance of a 100 times payoff, you s hould take that bet every time.ââPull the trigger.âThis one goes back to the fear of failure. Quora user Jordan Allen says:âSome people get the chance to see if their band could make it big or their business could skyrocket or their love of their life was moving to the other side of the world and wanted them to join. Itâs scary to think about the life we know versus the one we donât, and so often people drop these chances for no better reason than that theyâre scared.âIf you think of your life as an engineering problem, you always want to be prototyping - building a model and testing it. As Bernard Roth, Stanford professor and author of â The Achievement Habit,â says, you donât want to be tinkering forever, until youâve got the seemingly perfect model. So try out life in another country, or launch your business on a small scale and see how it goes. If it doesnât work out, you can always try again.âTurn your weaknesses into strengths.âThatâs a tip from Quora user Piyush Jbd, who writes about thinking of your weaknesses as a âcompetitive advantage.âItâs something both Michael Phelps and Winston Churchill learned to do, as Eric Barker writes in âBarking Up the Wrong Tree.âFor Phelps, having a somewhat awkward body type made him a pretty bad runner and dancer - but it also made him an incredible swimmer. For Churchill, being paranoid meant that he was once âdeemed unsuitable for the highest officesâ - but it also meant he recognized Hitler as a threat to the world.Figure out what makes you weird, and turn it into the thing that makes you a winner.âLearn to negotiate with politeness.âQuora user Nupur Jain includes this tip in her response.Learning to negotiate early in your career is a pretty big deal. As Business Insiderâs Tanza Loudenback and Skye Gould reported, âNegotiating your starting salary - and continuing to negotiate every few years or when you start a new job - could make a $1 million difference in your lifetime earnings.â$1 million! If youâre worried about botching your first salary negotiation, make sure to do your research so you get a sense of the standard salary for your position. And remember that salary isnât the only thing you can negotiate - you can also ask about things like performance bonuses, equity options, health insurance premiums, 401(k) matches, and help relocating for the job.âForgive yourself.âRedditor techniforus writes:âForgive yourself. Kicking yourself over past failures wonât change what happened, it will just leave you sore from being kicked so much. Give up all hope for a better past. Own who you have been so it doesnât own you. âThis really applies to all ages, but itâs a skill that takes a while to develop so you might as well start young and really figure it out. I havenât met many people under twenty who have taken it to heart but I have found a number of people in their twenties who are really starting to get it. Iâve also met people in their 80âs and 90âs who still donât get it and are filled with regrets.âJournalist Kathryn Schulz says something similar: She suggests that we can expect to have some regrets, and shouldnât feel bad about having them.âThe point isnât to live without any regrets, the point is to not hate ourselves for having them,â she says in her TED Talk. âWe need to learn to love the flawed, imperfect things that we create, and to forgive ourselves for creating them. Regret doesnât remind us that we did badly - it reminds us that we know we can do better.ââDonât compare yourself to others.ââDonât compare yourself to others,â writes Redditor hs trygeek1. âIn the social media age, it is tempting to beat yourself up if your friends are getting married, having kids, and living a life of luxury. We each live our own lives. The only thing youâre going to do is hurt yourself.Indeed, research suggests that comparing yourself to others is pretty pointless. Thatâs because, from the outside, people can seem a lot happier and less troubled than they really are.âDonât be afraid to change directions.âRedditor turkoosi_aurinko has some advice for anyone whoâs already feeling stuck:âYeah, you went to high school, then maybe did some college, tech school, training or whatever and thought that was your direction. But if you finally get a job, and youâre not happy, work to change that s- immediately. Spending your entire work week being unhappy just because it pays the bills will not make you happy. âThe longer you wait to change, the harder it will feel to change. So get used to change, because youâll probably need to do it a number of times throughout your life and career.âCareer coach and former Googler Jenny Blake, author of the book âPivot,â says making a career change doesnât have to be terrifying. You just need to go about the transition carefully - first drawing on your current experience, then networking, and then testing, until youâre ready to launch.Donât rack up debt.Redditor zoidbert writes about an all-too-common mistake:âI regret not saving more money and, more importantly, I regret racking up debt. That nearly killed me in my 30s. Some of it was necessary, of course, but a lot was credit card overkill. âI also regret not traveling more. Once we married and started having kids, travel got curtailed. We still went on trips but they were family trips. I wish I would have taken her on a couple of big out-of-country excursions before family came into play.If you find yourself in a similar situation, consider taking a tip from one former Business Insider reporter and going on a cash-only diet, during which you stop using credit and debit cards completely.âDonât burn your bridges.âRedditor Rohri_Calhoun says: âDonât burn your bridges. Personal, work, whatever. There will be times when you will need to be amiable with people from the past for various reasons and the last thing you need is someone saying âF- that guyâ because of something petty or stupid that could have easily been avoided.âThis advice applies especially when youâre quitting your job.According to national workplace expert Lynn Taylor, if your new position is in the same industry or city, thereâs a goo d chance youâll run into your former boss and coworkers again. Or, your former boss may talk to your new boss about you if they know each other. Keep it classy.âTry to avoid thinking of your 30s as some kind of stopping point for fun things.âRedditor Romination says:âThis is perhaps not the advice youâre looking for but maybe you should also try to avoid thinking of your 30s as some kind of stopping point for fun things, where all you can do is look back and sigh about what could have been. âI know of several people whose 30s have been more fun than their 20s, and itâs in part because they can look back with experience and realize theyâre better at balancing and enjoying the things they want to do. You still have so much in life, donât just let it be over because you survived another 365 days!ââDo not spend one more minute of your life with someone who makes you feel like you are less than you are.âRedditor rubyfisch focuses on relationships: âDo not spend one more minute of your life with someone who makes you feel like you are less than you are ⦠he or she will never change for the better and you might just change for the worse.âTake care of your body.Redditor DrewsephVladimir has some regrets of his own:âI wish I had taken better care of myself. Instead, I let my weight catch back up with me, I ignored a few dental problems, and I didnât take care of my finances as well as I should have.âI mean, donât get me wrong, Iâm 31 now, and none o f these problems are dire for me, but God theyâre a much bigger pain in the ass to deal with now, compared to how much effort it would have taken to not let them become an issue at all.âIt generally is easier to manage your weight when youâre younger because we tend to be less active as we age, Business Insiderâs Erin Brodwin reports. Moreover, we may become less attuned to our bodiesâ nutritional needs as we get older.âDonât get caught up in the cycle of buying expensive things to keep up with the Joneses.âRedditor Keetlady says: âDonât get caught up in the cycle of buying expensive things to keep up with the Joneses and impress people. People in their twenties seem to want it all NOW. Donât fall into that trap.âAuthor Thomas C. Corley, who spent five years interviewing rich people including self-made millionaires, found that lifestyle creep - the act of spending more as you get it, to save face among or to impress your peers - erodes wealth quickly. Delay ing gratification, instead, and saving that money for later has the potential to make you extremely wealthy down the line.âBuild upon friendships.âHstrygeek1 has another solid piece of advice:âBuild upon friendships. There is more to life than going out every night. Stay at home with close friends. Go on adventures together. âThat being said, donât be afraid to end some friendships. Fair weather friends are not worth your time. Stay loyal to those that truly matter and invest your time with them.âVanessa Van Edwards, a human-behavior researcher, recommends ditching your â ambivalent friends â - such as jealous, undermining, and unsure frenemies - to minimize stress in your life.âDonât rush to cram stuff into your twenties because you think you should.âRedditor michaelnoir writes:âI am 36 and I have never understood this âdo things before youâre 30â thing. I donât see why you canât do things after youâre 30, or after youâre 40. I donât see why the number 30 is so symbolic. âMy advice is donât rush to cram stuff into your twenties because you think you should. Just do what you want, do what feels natural, and take your time with it if need be.âThis article was co-written with Chris Weller and first appeared on Business Insider.

How to Write a One-Page Resume (Infographic)
How to Write a One-Page Resume (Infographic) How to Write a One-Page Resume (Infographic) Check out our one-page resume infographic Should a resume be one page? Ideally yes, its generally better to create a one-page resume as employers generally scan resumes in seconds. However, depending on the type of job youre applying for, and your level of experience, a two-page resume can be more effective. The reason why a one-page resume is better in the majority of cases is that employers dont want to read long resumes. As they have so many to look through, a short, concise resume is much more likely to grab their attention.Writing a one-page resume also gives you the chance to focus on and emphasize your strongest selling points. It can be difficult to decide what to leave out. You may have many achievements which youre proud of, but its worth it.Using a one-page resume template is a good place to start. Its then a case of choosing whats most relevant for the position youre applying for.CTA text=Create my resume for an interview url=https://app.resumecoach.com/question/ align=c enter amp-text=Create my resume for an interview amp-url=https://app.resumecoach.com/question/ amp-target=_self]How to create a one-page resumeNowadays, the best one-page resumes have to be concise and eye-grabbing enough to stand out when a person shuffles through a pile of them. They also need to contain the right words and terms to get past Applicant Tracking Systems (ATMs), which scan resumes to see if they contain the right keywords. The best way of doing this is by making a one-page editable resume which you can tailor to each job application. You can do this by carefully reading through each job and identifying the key job requirements (use the keywords to help you), and to them work these into your resume. As well as adding the necessary keywords you also need to carefully consider which of your skills, work experience, and qualifications are most relevant to the job youre applying for.If you are writing a student resume or an entry-level resume it may be the case that its eas y to fit most (if not all) of your achievements on a one-page job resume. If you are more experienced, what to leave out will require more consideration.Writing a one-page resume: what to leave out? What not to include on your resume? If youre struggling to reduce your resume down to a single-page resume, start by writing a list of your achievements and work experience and include details of what they involved. Then analyze each position youre applying for and choose the parts from your list which match the job. Write your most relevant achievements into your resume by writing short, concise bullet points which focus on your accomplishments. You shouldnt include any work experience which you gained more than 10-15 years ago. Theres no need to say references available on request as this goes without saying. If your resume is still longer than one page, reduce your education section. You shouldnt include your high-school education or irrelevant qualifications. Using an online resume buil der is a time-effective way of nailing the one-page resume format.Does a resume have to be one page? No. Although most employers prefer to receive one-page resumes, it is not always the case. When an employer is looking for someone with extensive experience it is necessary to write a more-than-one-page resume. There are certain professions that are exceptions and its commonplace to produce long resumes. These industries include medicine, law, and academia. Fior the vast majority of applications a one-page resume is best.Remeber you can always include a link to your LinkedIn profile, other professional social media sites, or a website youve been involved in. This gives the employer the choice of viewing a longer version of your background.Whereas your resume should be targeted for each application, your LinkedIn should be much more in-depth, providing detailed accounts of your education, skills, and work experience.One-Page Resume Infographic Create my RESUME now

Are You Reading the USAJOBS Announcements Carefully Enough
Are You Reading the USAJOBS Announcements Carefully Enough Are You Reading the USAJOBS Announcements Carefully Enough Are You Reading the USAJOBS Announcements Carefully Enough? Every federal job announcement comes with a helpful set of instructions and notices from the human resources specialist who produced the recruitment notice. Most applicants skim through these â" or ignore them altogether â" because they are crunched for time, or simply donât have the desire to read the entirety of a federal job announcement. But ignoring the instructions and notices on a federal job announcement is the most sure-fire way to guarantee that your application will not be considered. The job seeker who takes the time to read the helpful instructions and notices enjoys a âleg upâ in ensuring that their application packages meet the specific requirements set by Human Resources. Human Resources Specialists are very particular about the applications they oversee. With an average of 1,000 applicants for every generalist position, Human Resources Specialists need to weed out the competition; they do this by providing a number of very specific instructions. If the instructions are not followed, the application is either âscored-downâ or simply rated ineligible. If the instructions are followed, the application is reviewed, scored, andâ"barring any disqualifiersâ"rated eligible. One of the most important lessons you can apply when considering a federal job is: read the entire announcement and follow the directions. This sounds like common sense advice, yet everyday otherwise qualified federal job seekers see their applications excluded from consideration, because they did not take the time to read the announcement and follow its specific instructions. Here are some of my favorite notices, with comments: The Questionnaire Crosscheck NOTE: Your resume and supporting documentation will be verified. Your ratings in this Occupational Questionnaire are subject to evaluation and verification based on the documents and references you submit. Later steps in the selection process are specifically designed to verify your ratings. Deliberate attempts to falsify information may be grounds for not selecting you or for dismissing you from the position/agency. Kathryns comment: The HR person here is saying that your resume will be compared to your answers in the questionnaire. And if you inflated your questionnaire answers and your resume does not verify your level of skills, they have the authority to throw out your application. KSAs in the Resume NOTE: Your application and resume should demonstrate that you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Do not provide a separate narrative written statement. Rather, you must describe in your application how your past work experience demonstrates that you possess the KSAs identified below. Cite specific examples of employment or experience contained in your resume and describe how this experience has prepared you to successfully perform the duties of this position. DO NOT write see resume in your application! Kathryns comment: Your resume should include the KSAs. You should not write KSA narratives separately. And the examples demonstrating the KSAs should be within the resume. Specialized Experience Within their resume applicants must explain how they have gained the Specialized Experience required for this position. Applicants applying at the GS-09 level must have 24 months experience, education, or training in budget methods and operating procedures Kathryns comment: Your resume must explain how you gained the specialized experience. You must show that you have 24 months of budget experience and the details written in this paragraph. This MUST be in your resume! Word to the Wise There are, of course, a range of notices including everything from application instructions to warnings about false statements. Notices in an announcement are helpful to you, the applicant, because they serve as a roadmap for a successfully submitted application. Most important notices are in bold type, ALL CAPS, red type, or italics. Anytime you see words or phrases in one of these different font settings, take heed! It is imperative that you review these to determine if your application is falling short. These are just a few examples of the many specific instructions and notices that you will find in federal job announcements. Read them carefully! And then follow them exactly. Doing so can make all the difference in your federal job search.

Ferry Pilot Jobs and Other Ways to Get Flight Time
Ferry Pilot Jobs and Other Ways to Get Flight Time Ferry Pilot Jobs and Other Ways to Get Flight Time For new pilots looking to gain hours and experience in preparation for a professional pilot job, it can be difficult to find a way. If youre a low-time pilot and have exhausted my first list of 10 time-building options, Ive come up with a few more options for you to consider. 01 Agricultural Flying Better known as crop dusters, agricultural pilots are specially trained to fly low and slow, spraying chemicals onto fields. These jobs sometimes have high minimum hour requirements, but often new guys can get in with low hours. Crop dusting is hazardous and seasonal and requires a significant amount of training. 02 Fly the Pipeline Many green pilots build their time through pipeline inspections of local oil fields. Often, these jobs are contracted through the local FBO, flight school or another airport business, but other times the pilot will be hired directly by the oil company. Pipeline flying is boring and repetitive, but its a good option for building time, especially for pilots who live in a state where oil is a hot commodity. 03 Farm Flying Many of todays farmers and ranchers are employing modern techniques, some involving aircraft, and pilots. Farm pilots might be hired to inspect irrigation pipes, check on that status of cattle or other animals, or to inspect property fence lines. 04 Bush Flying Bush pilots fly small aircraft loaded with supplies, food, and people into remote areas that are difficult to reach by vehicle. Bush flying is common in places like Alaska, and it can be a hazardous job. Some bush pilot jobs have higher requirements than others, and the job might require odd hours and a random schedule. But many bush pilots find the job very enjoyable and rewarding. 05 Unscheduled Charters Commercial pilots looking to build hours can offer unscheduled charter flights (but are not allowed to hold out or offer scheduled service.) Many pilots get a few additional hours by flying friends around or by flying the random airport patron where he needs to go. 06 Ferrying Aircraft Ferry pilots are hired to bring aircraft from one place to another. These aircraft are often new airplanes that someone has just purchased or aircraft that needs re-positioning. Ferry pilot jobs are a great way to build hours. The flights might be random and difficult to discover, but a ferry pilot has the opportunity to log many hours in a single flight. 07 Buy Your Hours Sometimes youll find that the best and most timely option is to buy the flight time. If theres a company that you really want to work for and you dont quite meet the minimum qualifications for hiring, you might consider just buying the hours that you need. This is a popular option for pilots who have, say, 40 hours of multi-engine time but need 50 to apply to a job. Obviously, this is an expensive option, but often its the quickest way, and often the only way to get the hours necessary when you need to get your application in quickly. 08 Earn a New Pilot Certificate/Rating If you have to buy flight time, its always best to apply those flight hours toward a new certificate or rating. That way, youll have another credential to add to your resume. If you need more multi-engine time, for example, get a multi-engine instructor certificate while you build the hours. 09 Buy an Airplane For many of us, buying an airplane isnt an option due to the cost, but if you do the math and it makes sense, then take the plunge and buy an airplane. Youll probably find it a convenient way to build hours, but there are other benefits, too, like being able to fly yourself wherever you want to go without having to worry about scheduling conflicts with other pilots. 10 Join a Club Flight clubs are a good option for cheaper rental rates, and membership usually includes other benefits like fuel discounts and access to instructors. You might even find a few flying buddies to split the rental costs with this way. 11 Become an Instructor Pilots talk a lot about doing anything they can to avoid flight instruction, but the job has its perks. Yes, youll fly a lot of patterns and do a lot of touch-and-goes in hot, bumpy air, but youll gain hours quickly and learn a lot. And instructor time is valuable time to have in your logbook when it comes to getting a job at an airline.

6 Ways to Hack Your Resume and Get a Better Job Without an Advanced Degree
6 Ways to Hack Your Resume and Get a Better Job â" Without an Advanced Degree 6 Ways to Hack Your Resume and Get a Better Job - Without an Advanced Degree Building the career you want takes constant improvement, whether youâre hoping to advance within your field or transition to another industry. One path to build your desired credentials? Returning to college to earn an additional degree. While an advanced degree can open the door to more career opportunities, it comes at a steep cost. The average Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduate, for example, owes $42,000 in combined undergrad and grad school debt. A Master of Arts graduate averages more than $58,000 in student loans. Before jumping back into school, check if there are other ways to build your credentials and hack your career - without getting into debt. Here are some alternatives to beef up your resume more quickly, easily and cheaply. If youâre thinking of returning to college to earn an additional degree , determine what you hope to gain from that experience. Some careers are accessible only by earning certain credentials, as is the case for lawyers and doctors. But if youâre eyeing an MBA to start your own business or a masterâs degree in creative writing to write a book, consider how you could accomplish these goals without a degree. If youâre excited about learning from experts in your field of interest, for instance, finding a mentor could be effective - and much cheaper than the cost of college. Build connections with such professionals through networking events, mutual contacts or social media. If you establish a good acquaintanceship with them, see if theyâre willing to provide guidance or share their expertise. Whether you want to change career paths or take your qualifications to the next level, look into certifications that can help you get there. âYou can take certificate programs, learn, and build your resume for the path youâre pursuing to show youâre on your way,â said Vicki Salemi, a career expert for job search website Monster. Perhaps youâre considering a second bachelorâs degree in computer science to switch to a programming career. You might be able to make that leap with a smaller investment of time and money through a coding boot camp instead. Some certifications in certain fields can be completed in hours. Others might require months of study or a big exam to get certified. Explore different programs to see what could be an option for you. You donât have to earn college credits to continue your education and improve your professional skills. Your education can take many forms, from noncredit community classes to online courses. You can take online courses through companies such as Udemy or General Assembly , for example. Some online courses offer a certification of completion that can boost your resume. Maybe you arenât yet qualified for the job you want - at least, not enough to get a paid gig. But if youâre willing to work for free or take on extra tasks at your current job, you could accumulate hands-on experience in a new field or develop a new skill. For example, you can âvolunteer in your community and in your company on projects outside of your department,â Salemi suggested. Or you could do freelance work at a steep discount to build your portfolio. Networking is a smart move to build your career, but it also can help enhance your resume. Seek out ways to become involved with professional conferences and groups in your current or desired career field. In the process, you could gain some accolades to add to your resume or cite in job interviews. Here are some ways to do so, according to Salemi: Submit your work in professional competitions or apply for awards. Volunteer to work on the boards of local clubs, chapters or organizations for your profession. Organize a workshop or make a presentation on a subject at a seminar. Submit proposals to participate in a panel at a professional conference or convention . Start blogging and posting on social media about topics related to your career. Engage other experts online and in person to build credibility in your field. Sometimes you donât need more skills or experience; instead, you can demonstrate the connection between the work youâve done and the job requirements of an employer. Start with your cover letter and resume. âOn [your] resume, even if you donât have a specific skill set an employer is looking for, highlight experiences and your abilities to show that youâve done something similar,â Salemi suggested. If you get an interview, make sure youâre prepared to make your case. âWhen you speak about your skill set during a job interview, clearly articulate how you would be able to still do the job,â Salemi said. Before you start planning a return to college, consider if you might already be more qualified than you think. Building the credentials you need and filling any gaps in your qualifications often can happen faster and be done more cheaply than earning an advanced degree.
